Chapter 12

Technology & Social Studies

10 themes in social studies curriculum-

Culture

Time, continuity & change

People, places & environments

Individual development & identity

Individuals, groups & institutions

Power, authority & governance

Production, distribution &consumption

Science, technology & society

Global connections

Civic ideals & practices

Schools face the dilemma of how to teach s.s. in a meaningful way.

Conflict over what to teach and how to teach it.

The Internet has brought in many resources and opinions- not all true or accurate. Kids need to be taught how to decide what info. is reputable.

Some ways to integrate technology into s.s.-

Simulated problem solving environments-students interact with simulated events or locations. Students practice problem solving skills and see s.s. as more relevant to their daily lives.

Graphic representations such as timeline generators help students visualize difficult concepts.

Virtual trips lets students travel virtually to places they can not go and enhances real trips the students are able to take.

Student Telecollaboration lets students work together on the same project from distant locations.

Digital Storytelling lets students tell stories about people, places or events using images and sound.

Electronic Research- the Internet provides the most current info. possible. Students need to be taught where to find and identify quality info.

Technology is also useful in practicing factual information, such as states and capitals, using, for example a game like Classroom Jeopardy.

Technology in Math and Science Instruction

1)Math

Virtual Manipulatives-
students work with simulated objects for activities that used to involve real manipulatives.

Some mathematical problem solving can take the form of a game--For ex. Zoombini's Logical Journey involves logic, data analysis, graphing and algebra.

Students need to learn math using symbols, words, graphs and numbers.

"Internet resources can help students make connections between abstract geometry and real objects..."

Students must be able to express their mathematical ideas in words.

Basic/Fundamental math skills can be practiced through software such as Early Math and Science or Boxer Math.

2)Science

Elementary teachers often lack the depth of knowledge necessary to teach science well.

Strategies for integrating technology into science
Data collection
Scientific Inquiry
Authentic science experiments
Assessing science info and tools

Simulations can make hard to grasp concepts easier, ex, mixing colors or combining chemicals and seeing a simulated result. Cost less and are safer than actual experiments.

The latest information in science is much easier to get via the Internet.

The National Science Foundation has funded digital libraries for science-used for research and info re scientific questions and issues.

Using the Internet in the Classroom

Three ways to use the Internet at school-

For gaining and analyzing info.

Communication between students or between teachers and students.

Individual or group problem solving.

You can have...electronic penpals, electronic mentors and virtual field trips.

Students work can be posted on websites through electronic publishing.

PBL=problem based learning

4 kinds-

Collaborative or webquests.

Parallel -students work on and solve problems independently, then compare their process and results with other students who solved the same problem.

Data analysis-students use existing 'real life' data to solve problems and answer questions.

Simulations- students use the computer to perform virtual experiments.

Social Action Projects require students involvement in a local or global social concern.

Figure 8.1-page 254-255 Examples of Web-based lessons and projects.

Reasons to use the Internet in the classroom
-info. for student research
-motivation for students
-practice with gaining and using info. form the web.
-practice with understanding and solving problems based on complex issues.
-teaching students how to work together.
-offers opportunities to explore their own and other cultures.

JPEG and GIF -formats used to download images.

Plug-ins-let you see and hear what's on your computer-movie, animation and streaming audio plug-ins.

Website creation- create your own---hard
Use website creation software---so much better!

Chapter 7

Distance Learning

Distance learning is is defined as any learning where the students are connected to other learners, "information resources", instructors and/or any combination of those things.

Some distance learning is done without an instructor present often through the Internet. It can also be used to supplement instruction from a classroom teacher.

With distance learning students have access to materials, courses and experts not otherwise available tot hem. They have information immediately available and are able to communicate and share information with other students and teachers quickly and effectively.

"The Digital Divide" dramatically illustrates the case of the "haves" and the "have nots." Some children do not have the ready availability of computers and the Internet( at home and at school) and are not able to fully take advantage of the benefits distance learning offers.

Too much time on the computer can lead to social and developmental problems. Limits of one to two hours daily are suggested.

Virtual schools are controversial. They have a higher drop out rate than traditional schools. some worry that virtual schools are a way to get the government to fund home schooling. The successful virtual school student is very organized, able to motivate himself and has better than average computer skills.

Problems with the Internet-
Accessing inappropriate or offensive material. This can be minimized by installation of a firewall or filtering software.

Safety and privacy issues for students. Students need to be taught never to provide their full name or personal information to anyone on the Internet.

Fraud. Transact online business only with reputable companies at secure sites.
The URL for a secure site usually begins with https, not just http'

Viruses and hacking. Viruses can come with e-mail attachments and downloads. Hackers get unauthorized access to a system. Firewalls can help keep hackers out, but sometimes interfere with authorized use of the system.

Plagiarism and copyright infringement. Websites have been developed to check student work for plagiarism: www.turnitin.com and www.mydropbox.com. Students should check for copyright information and either ask permission to use the information from the person holding the copyright(if noted) or site the URL and owner name.

URLS= uniform resource locators

Any part of a webpage can be programmed to be a link.

Two types of search engines: Major search engines, like Google, and metacrawlers, like Mamma. Metacrawlers use more than one search engine at a time to locate information.

Three key points when evaluating Internet info:
Content-is the information true and accurate?
Design-is the website easy to use? Can you find the information you are looking for?
Safe and appropriate-the material is not dangerous, offensive or illegal.
